About the Backgammon game

It is a board game for two people in which both luck and strategy play a big role.
The playing field consists of 24 triangles and the bar, which separates the outer fields and the home fields. 15 black and 15 white pieces start in a fixed formation on the board, with white starting first.
The aim of the game is to move your own pieces into the home field by rolling the dice and then to throw them out. Individual pieces belonging to the opponent can be thrown out, which the other player then has to bring back into play in order to continue - this always makes for exciting situations.
The winner is the first person to have no more stones on the board.

The name of the game is made up of the words back and gammon, the latter being an obsolete form of game. Back means that captured pieces are rolled back into the game.
World Backgammon Championships have been held since 1967. Buy your game and try your luck!

Origins of the game

The roots of this game go back a long way - the game was mentioned in literature as early as 1650. Similar dice board games existed in ancient Greece, and precursors were widespread in the Middle Ages at the latest. In German, the game was called Wurfzabel at the time and was hardly different from today's backgammon. Tradition says that Richard the Lionheart in England at that time forbade ordinary soldiers from playing dice for money - only knights and those of higher rank were allowed to do so.
