In 1970, Opel, then owned by General Motors, launched the five-seater sports coupe Manta as a competitor to the Ford Capri, while the competitors in the USA were called Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. The Manta had a self-supporting steel body, a fully synchronized 4-speed gearbox and independent front wheel suspension. From August 1975, the Manta A was replaced by the Manta B. At the end of August 1988, production of the Manta was discontinued after more than a million vehicles had been manufactured.
