When the Trabant 601 was introduced in 1963, the GDR press described it as a vehicle with a modern design. Compared to the P50/P60, the Duroplast body was changed primarily in the front and roof areas. Overall, however, it was not a new model but a further development of the P60 based on the P50. This further development was continued throughout the entire series production period from 1964 to 1990 and ended with the Trabant 1.1, which was built in parallel, and the so-called Wende (the unification of West and East Germany). The engine initially offered the 17 kW known from the previous model. From 1969, the P601 had 191 kW (26 hp), and from 1974 the P65 engine came with needle bearing connecting rod bushings, which enabled the mixed lubrication (oil-fuel ratio) to be reduced from 1:33 to 1:50. The high engine noise level of all Trabant vehicles with unpleasantly high frequencies could be reduced in the 601 by soundproofing mats in the engine and interior, but it still remained comparatively very high. The crankshaft, which was often criticized in the previous models, also remained a problem and often led to engine failure. Nevertheless, the Trabant was and is a cult car and is very popular with collectors. With Cobi you can now recreate this vehicle in 1:12 scale. The model is around 30 cm long, 13 cm wide and 12 cm high and with 1415 parts you can look forward to several hours of building fun.
