The F/A-18 Hornet is a twin-engine multi-role combat aircraft with foldable wings that was originally designed by McDonnell Douglas for the US Navy's Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and offers a high level of flexibility in attacking ground, sea and air targets at long distances. The F/A stands for Fighter/Attack and indicates the versatility of the aircraft. It was first used in April 1986 in an air raid on the Libyan city of Benghazi. Since then, the F/A-18 has been used in practically all major US military operations. Delivery of the final series configuration of version C/D began on November 1, 1989.
