The Citroën DS was a full-size sedan from the French manufacturer Citroën with front-wheel drive and a mid-mounted front engine that was produced from 1955 to 1975 and exported to many countries. The abbreviation DS is a play on the French word déesse (goddess or deity). The Citroën DS set new standards in ride quality, handling and braking. These include the self-leveling hydropneumatic suspension developed by Paul Magès and the disc brakes that were used for the first time in a mass-produced vehicle. Also particularly noteworthy are the design by Flaminio Bertoni and André Lefèbvre and the wheels that were each attached with only a central hexagon socket screw. The vehicle came third in the 1999 Car of the Century vote and fifth in 2005 in Automobile Magazine's selection of the '100 coolest cars'.
