The F-35 Lightning II from Lockheed Martin is a fifth-generation US stealth multi-role combat aircraft and the first with stealth technology that is also in use by friendly nations. The F-35B is the VTOL variant of the Lightning II, meaning it is able to take off and land vertically. There is also variant A for conventional takeoffs and landings (CTOL) and the carrier-based variant C for the US Navy. The first F-35B was rolled out on January 21, 2009, and on September 27, 2018, combat units of this variant flew missions in Afghanistan for the first time. The F-35 is the first mass-produced US fighter aircraft with voice control and - to relieve the pilot - only has a single large display in the cockpit, a so-called panoramic cockpit display (PCD) with a touchscreen design. The stealth capabilities of the F-35 are particularly outstanding, reducing the possibilities of enemy reconnaissance technology to a minimum.
