The Horten Ho 229 was the prototype of a flying wing that was designed towards the end of World War II by the brothers Reimar and Walter Horton and was intended to carry the flying wing concept into the new jet era. Since the BMW jet engines that had been planned were not available, the already tried and tested Junkers Jumo 004 engines were used, which required a major reconstruction of the central section. The Junkers Jumo 004 was the world's first series-ready jet engine. The official first flight of the prototype with Erwin Ziller as pilot took place on February 2, 1945 and was largely satisfactory. During the last test flight, however, an engine failure occurred, causing the aircraft to crash. Ziller suffered fatal injuries. Despite this incident, 40 aircraft were ordered. These were never produced because around 2 months later on April 14, 1945, US troops reached the production facility in Friedrichroda.
