The Messerschmitt Me 262 was the first jet aircraft to be built in series. Between 1943 and 1945, around 800 of the twin-jet aircraft were delivered to the German Air Force. The A-1 (Schwalbe) version was correctly used as an interceptor, but the A-2 (Sturmvogel) variant was designed as a fighter-bomber on the Führer's express orders, which quickly proved to be a strategic error due to the insufficient accuracy when dropping bombs.
