The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was the heaviest single-engine fighter of World War II and - together with the North American P-51 - also the most-built US fighter of that time. Over 15,000 of the all-metal mid-wing aircraft were built by Republic Aviation Company from 1943 until the end of the war. The P-47 was mainly used as a fighter-bomber in the European war zone because its radius of action was too small for a possible use as a long-range escort fighter, but its robustness and the air-cooled radial engine predestined it for the former task. It was also used in the Pacific region. They were rarely used due to their lack of range. The machines flew over half a million missions with great success.
