Patrol Torpedo Boat PT-109 was an Elco boat of the PT-103 class and with its 23 m length and 40 t mass was one of the heaviest US MTBs in World War II. Manufactured at Elco in Bayonne NJ, it was handed over to the Navy on July 10, 1942. On April 23, 1943, PT-109 received its most famous captain, Lieutenant JG John F. Kennedy, the future US President. The boat was rammed by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri on August 2, 1943 in the Southwest Pacific (Solomon Islands) and exploded.
