U 96 was a Type VII C submarine of the German Navy during World War II and gained additional fame through Lothar-Günther Buchheim's novel 'Das Boot' and its 1981 film adaptation, which it presumably served as a model for. U 96 was commissioned on September 14, 1940 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock. On its 11 combat missions, the boat sank a total of 29 ships with 178,651 GRT and damaged a further 4 ships with 33,000 GRT. It was decommissioned on February 15, 1945 in Wilhelmshaven and destroyed on March 30 of the same year in a bombing raid by units of the 8th Air Fleet of the USAAF.
