Savon du Midi olive soap, 80 g
Olive oil is the origin of Savon de Marseille, the most famous French soap with the longest tradition. Savon de Marseille - a traditional soap made from olive oil - was produced in the area around Marseille 500 years ago.
It was Louis XIV, the Sun King, who established the first rules for soap making in the 17th century. Only soaps made in and around Marseille and whose main ingredients were olive oil and water from the Mediterranean could be called Savon de Marseille. This law is still in force today (although the regulations now allow other vegetable oils).
Olive, palm or coconut oil is still used to make soap today. The vegetable oils are mixed with soda and boiled at 120°C in large cauldrons. After being washed with salt water, the soap is dried for 48 hours. The soap is then cut into blocks and processed further.
