White-tailed deer graze in the morning and evening. As herbivores, they feed on green plants and nuts. Deer live in small groups - usually just a mother and her calves. Males have magnificent antlers and live in small groups of three or four. Both male and female deer have reddish-brown fur in the summer and gray-brown fur in the winter. Since they have few natural enemies, deer populations sometimes grow so large that they can no longer find enough food. Deer are ruminants like cattle. This means that they have four stomachs and then regurgitate half-digested food. This complicated process allows deer to eat things like twigs that most animals cannot digest.
