It's finally strawberry season! Celebrate Strawberry Harvest Day with us!

Strawberry Harvest Day will be celebrated on May 20, 2024. Like many other strange holidays, this one also comes from the USA. In many regions there, the harvest is already in full swing. In some places, the strawberry harvest season starts in May, in others it starts in early June.

Of course, strawberries that you pick yourself taste the best. If you don't have your own garden but would like to pick lots of these delicious fruits, you should take a look at http://www.selberpfluecken.ch/.
There is a great overview of where strawberries (and much more) can be harvested.

Pure, sliced, pureed, sweetened, iced, frozen, heated: we love strawberries in all forms and combinations!
We made jam from the first strawberries of the year… Delicious!

Strawberry Jam

It's very easy, you need:

1 kg ripe strawberries
1 packet of gelling sugar (for berry jam)
1 Bourbon vanilla pod
1 organic lemon

Twist-off jars

First we boil the jars and dry them thoroughly.

Now we wash the strawberries and cut them into small pieces. Then we mix everything with the gelling sugar, the pulp of half a vanilla pod and the lemon zest.

Then put everything in a large pot and cook on high heat for five minutes, stirring constantly.

Then we have to do the gelling test, i.e. put a spoonful of the jam on a cold surface and see if it sets (don't forget to test it! ;)).
If the jam has passed the gelling test, we carefully fill it into the jars, screw the lids on and place them upside down to cool.

Goes wonderfully on bread or in yoghurt…

3 fascinating strawberry facts

1. The strawberry is a nut. And a rose.

From a botanical point of view, strawberries are not berries at all, but rather aggregate fruits. And they actually come from the rose family. In art, they actually stand for rosy attributes such as humility and modesty. Speaking of which, if you want to impress someone with great strawberry roses, take a look at this. It's really easy, you just need a few kitchen utensils and a steady hand. And strawberries, of course.

2. Strawberries are real superfood

Strawberries are not only extremely delicious, but are also considered to be particularly healthy. And for good reason, because they contain hardly any fat or calories and are rich in vitamin C, fiber, folic acid and potassium. The perfect food for pregnant women too!

3. The strawberry is a pineapple…

... and this does not only apply to the garden strawberry, which in Latin is called fragaria ananassa. The name pineapple was used to distinguish the large-fruited plants from the small wild strawberries.

Do you love strawberries too?
Tell me your favorite recipe, I’m looking forward to it!
